In this talk I will describe how, using a novel handheld genome sequencer, the Oxford Nanopore MinION, we may be able move to a paradigm of rapid genome sequence-based diagnostics for infectious disease, and how genome data can be linked to national and international databases to elucidate the origins and spread of international outbreaks.
